PUTTING THE BOOT IN

With car boot sales and markets being the single biggest source of fake goods in the UK, council leaders and chief executives have called on the Government to tackle this damaging, and growing, problem.

Over 130 delegates, including 23 council leaders and 12 council chief executives signed an open letter to the Government, at the recent Local Government Association Conference in Harrogate, calling on Ministers to fulfil their undertaking to consult on measures to tighten the regulation of occasional sales and markets - originally promised by the end of 2007. Action on Age verification online - July 31st 2009
IMRG, the membership community for the e-retail industry that helps to maximise the commercial potential of online shopping has launched a long overdue action plan on age verification for internet transactions.

Traditional means of age verification do not work online because the internet is changing the way that consumers shop and retailers trade, says IMRG.

This change is bringing new structural requirements, and one of these is the need for a mechanism that will enable retailers to verify the age-associated eligibility of online customers to buy certain products, in order to protect both minors and themselves.  Read more

Thank Crunchie it was Fraud Day - July 21st 2009
Thousands of Crunchie Bars proved a sweet success as part of the Retail Fraud Awareness Day on June 30.

The chocolate was used as promotion to highlight the fact that UK retailers are losing around £4 billion* in shrinkage - loss caused by theft, fraud, waste or process failure - every year.

Half of UK shoppers look for 'Internet Shopping is Safe'(ISIS) logo when purchasing online

More than half of online shoppers look for the logo of Internet Shopping is Safe, according to new research.

According to the Kelkoo report 50% of customers shopping online look for the ISIS logo on accreditated retailers' sites.

Internet Shopping Is Safe (ISIS) is a merchant accreditation program run by the industry body for Internet Retailing, IMRG. Backed by SecureTrading and many larger retail brands, ISIS offers customers the confidence to shop online, knowing that bearers of the logo have signed up to a well respected accreditation program which includes best practice, a site audit and legal obligations at its core. Foiled - June 25th 2009
Police have praised the collaborative approach of the Retail Loss Prevention Fashion Forum after an intense information sharing operation resulted in a sting operation and conviction of the ringleader of a national criminal gang that has preyed on stores across the UK.

Michael Andrew Patrick Duffy was sentenced to 18-months in prison with six months to run consecutively after pleading guilty to theft of thousands of pounds worth of merchandise from fashion stores across the UK as part of the so-called 'Argos Bag' Gang, named because their modus operandi involved a foil-lined Argos shopping bag to interfere with sophisticated EAS systems.
