Product Value Management: Moving Beyond Asset Protection and Shrinkage Management
Some years ago smart organisations made the shift from security to asset protection – moving away from a reactive, detection style of shrinkage management to one premised upon a proactive deterrent model, recognising that it is easier and cheaper to prevent loss than it is to catch and prosecute the people found responsible.
Whilst this has proved successful, the dynamic nature of the retail environment, together with ongoing intractable legacy issues (such as a lack of agreement on what 'shrinkage' actually is) requires 'asset protection' to now make the next evolutionary step, to Product Value Management (PVM).
PVM focuses on ensuring the intended value of a product is fully realised and requires a much more progressive reinterpretation of the role of the organisation in securing value. It needs actions based upon a full understanding of all the causes of loss regardless of where or how they occur and the prioritisation of those that impact the most on the value of products. PVM cuts across organisational boundaries, requiring a genuine multi-disciplinary approach that is not limited by traditional boundaries of how loss is defined and prioritised.

Online Fraud: Knowledge is Power
Despite the economic doom and gloom, 2010 proved to be another bumper year for eCommerce. But with merchants losing an average of 1.6% of online revenue to online fraud, no one can afford to rest on their laurels. Consistently rated as the number one threat to merchants, online fraud is getting trickier to detect.
Drawing on findings from CyberSource's 2011 UK Online Fraud Report, Chris Andrews will explore some of the key challenges facing today's retailers and will discuss techniques and guidelines for improving process inefficiencies and the building of fraud detection rules to help you preserve good customers and keep fraudsters out.

The Shrinkage tipping point
B&Q is the UK's leading home improvement and garden centre retailer but it, like all large retail businesses, has reached tipping point when it comes to shrink management.
With 330 stores nationwide, more than three million customers walking through its doors each week and 30,000 staff, Ray took on the retailer's challenge to reduce shrinkage.
Starting the journey by establishing governance and accountability, Ray will be sharing his success in re balancing the retailer's shrinkage tipping point as well as talking about the importance of getting business-wide buy in and the pain involved in instigating that necessary wholesale culture shift.
With a team of 50 and a career that spans more than three decades with B&Q, Ray, certainly understands the retail environment and has a wealth of experience in protecting a complex retailer from theft and fraud.
Whilst Ray's adamant that the fast-paced and changing retail environment means the profit protection journey is continuously evolving and he doesn't have all the answers - this talk is a must for anyone with an interest in or accountability for re balancing their business' shrinkage tipping point.

Loss Prevention challenge in today’s climate and beyond.
There is more to loss prevention than what you can see within a profit and loss account. It is not just the thief or fraudster; it is also the ‘hidden’ values within the business that can affect the bottom line profit and reputation of a company.
There is a point to satisfying the measurable, but is this the place where you are in fact saving the most and being the most effective?
Retail Profit protection consultant Paul Hollingworth argues that retailers may have a fantastic low shrinkage percentage against sales, but the sales margin and final profit are eaten away through poor practices and inefficiency. Both of which can and do lead full circle back to the opportunity for fraud, crime and waste.
In his presentation Paul takes a holistic view of loss prevention looking at broader issues including staff education and how issues of compliance can impact the bottom line as much as fraud

'E' is for EBay and Engagement
EBay has previously been perceived by many bricks and mortar retailers as a fence for stolen goods – often items shoplifted from their stores and warehouses. But the world's largest online market has become a retailer itself and has put in place two former retail Loss Prevention executives to lead its global asset protection programme. Now the once of the retailer has engaged upon charm offensive to change its perception and position its offering as collaborative and out to 'get the bad guys off the site' with a host of free and ready to use online tools.
In this presentation Global Asset Protection Senior Manager for eBay John Mearls and Fraud Investigator Sarah Douglas talk about how EBay has reached out to the Loss Prevention forums and individual retailers to help solve their collective pain and with the help of Daniel Lowson of John Lewis providing a case study of collaborative working.

The Right Medicine for risky business
Community pharmacies provide a vital local service. However their location on the High Street and the nature of the products and services they provide raise concerns for the safety and welfare of staff.
This session aims to describe some ongoing and proposed initiatives to address the vulnerabilities present in community pharmacies.
Doug Russell, health and safety officer for USDAW will open the discussion with a brief introduction linking the issue of violence to staff in community pharmacies to the wider issue of work-related violence in relation to the union's members who work in, and deliver to pharmacies as well as offering actual examples of typical incidents.
Paul Winstanley, head of national operations for the Co-operative will outline the role of the Group's staff protection strategy in developing a more solid evidence base for risk assessment survey and training in this area.
Finally, Denham Phipps of the University of Manchester will outline a proposal for a study to investigate measures for violence and risk reduction in community pharmacies in the UK, and the support his team requires to gather evidence for the study.

The challenges and opportunities of increased online trade
John Lewis is one of the UK's most distinctive and aspirational brands. The success of the bricks and mortar business is being rolled out online with increasing sales and potential threats.
Liz Heaton will describe how the business has moved over the past 12 months with emphasis upon not only UK growth but the introduction of international delivery. She will explore the changing patterns of fraud and JLP's responses in terms of the speed of fraudsters behaviour change and the scale of 'Authenticated' fraud as well as the limitations of 3D secure. In short, the ambition and aspirations to be a truly multi-channel retailer with consistent customer experience depends upon having in place a first rate fraud prevention strategy and armoury.

Inside the mind of the hacker
The presentation by Neil O Neil, the 'ethical hacker' at last year's Retail Fraud 'On The Road' seemed somewhat James Bond-esque and futuristic and belonging more to the world of espionage fiction than the world on online shopping.
However, with every newspaper and channel carrying daily coverage of the latest cyber attack upon Government and big business and even news media themselves hacking into mobile phone records, his presentation now seems more than prophetic. For this reason, Retail Fraud 'On The Road' is delighted to welcome back by overwhelming demand Neil to talk about the new and latest threats and what retailers should be doing to protect their data and competitive advantage in their online operations.
